In your sump basin, you have one of these.
A PRIMARY or MAIN SUMP PUMP that does most of the work keeping ground and rain water out and away from your home.
It’s your first line and sometimes only line of protection against flooding, it’s important that it be durable and reliable.
Our most popular primary pump is the WC33i. It’s a rugged 1/3 HP pump with high pumping capacity and a sophisticated, highly reliable digital switch and controller. If your situation is like most, the WC33i is probably the best choice.
Having a Great primary Sump Pump pump is essential, but don’t forget:
“If you don’t have a backup sump pump, you don’t have a sump pump at all !”
Every sump basin should have both a primary and a backup system.
Check out our COMBO Sump Pump Systems for the easiest, most affordable way to get the right protection for your home and what you own.

As you may know by now, we here at The Sump Pump Company firmly believe if you don’t have a backup sump pump, you don’t have a sump pump at all! That’s because ALL sump pumps eventually fail, and without a good backup system, you won’t know the pump has failed until you have a flood! Everybody with a sump basin should have both a primary AND a backup system.
A battery backup system is your insurance policy when the primary pump fails – it consists of a separate pump and switch, connected to a controller and battery. The backup pump is designed to kick in when the primary pump either doesn’t run, or can’t keep up with the inflow of water.
The battery backup pump system we install most often is the Pro Series 2400. Available separately or as part of our C33 COMBO Sump Pump System, the Pro Series 2400 has all the right features to ensure your home is protected.
There are so many backup systems available, with such a wide variation in quality, capacity, and features, it can seem overwhelming to try to pick the right one. We take backup sump pump systems extremely seriously, because we know they are your last line of defense against flooding.
The Sump Pump Company carries and endorses both PHCC Pro Series and Ion Technologies.
They have a great combination of capability and reliability.
Our most popular backup pump system is the 2400. This system is designed to monitor and test itself constantly, and alert you whenever there is a problem.
Priceless peace of mind that’s not too hard on the budget, choose the Sumpro Battery Backup. This system provides easy to read LCD screen for real time monitoring.
One of the most common failures of a sump pump system is a SWITCH failure. Too often, we find that a pump would have worked fine, but the switch never activated it. Just as bad is a switch that gets stuck ON, causing the pump to run dry and burn out. Switches are important enough that we felt they deserved their very own section!
All of our pumps (primary and backup) come standard with dual float switches, so if one float fails, the second one automatically takes over – we think that’s absolutely critical protection. However, our BEST pump switches do a lot more than just turn the pump on & off: they MONITOR the system and ALARM when there is a problem. They even exercise the pump automatically, to help it last longer!
We use PHCC Pro Series switches and, state-of-the-art pump controls from Ion Technologies in our experience theses companies provide the best combination of reliability and innovative features. These manufacturers are committed to constantly improving their products, so they offer the best protection possible for your home/business and what you own.
The Deluxe Controller & Dual Float Switch (standard with S3, S5 & Weil primary pumps) is our most popular switch, and the one we recommend for most installations. Our owner Dave uses a DFC2 for his primary pump, and he sleeps well at night knowing he’s protected. In fact, Dave likes it so much, we automatically upgrade the factory-supplied switch on every C33 Combo system to the DFC2!
The combination of an Ion Technologies pump and a battery backup system provides the most reliable means of keeping water out of the basement and threats of stormwaters. We feel that these switches and controllers are among the most reliable on the market, innovative controllers provide extra peace of mind because you know your pump system is being monitored and exercised constantly.

Check valves are used to ensure that water pumped from your basin travels in only one direction – out of the house! A hinged flap pivots inside the check valve body, opening and allowing water to flow in one direction, but swinging closed when water tries to flow the other way.
Check valves should be installed in the discharge of every single pump, in fact they are standard with all of our installations. In the case where two pumps connect to a single pipe, the check valves play an extremely important role – they prevent one pump’s discharge from flowing through the other pump back to the basin, and instead force the water out of the house.
A common problem is a noisy “ker-plunk!” sound from the piping, which happens at the end of a pumping cycle. When the pump turns off, the water in the vertical pipe naturally wants to fall back down into the basin. The check valve is designed to prevent this, and the weight of the water causes it to slam shut, creating the noise.
If the ker-plunk is driving you ker-razy, we have something that can help! A silent check valve is designed (just like the name says) to operate without noise. Silent check valves perform the same function – only allowing water to flow out – but they make almost no sound when the pump shuts off.
You can upgrade any of our individual pumps, or a Custom COMBO System, with a silent check valve.
Pump discharge piping arrangements can vary widely, depending on a myriad of factors. In general, we make sure that pumps have proper check valves, that piping is solidly put together and secured to prevent movement or breakage, that horizontal pipe runs are properly sloped, and that the system is not prone to freezing. We find 1-1/2″ diameter pipe to be adequate for most installations, although 2″ is also common, especially with larger pumps. The larger the pipe, the more water the pump system can remove, but in most cases the benefits of larger pipe don’t warrant the cost of replacing the existing one.
A basin cover not only makes your pump installation look professional, it’s also an essential safety item. People and pets can be injured (or worse) if they fall into an unprotected sump basin. Foreign objects can potentially foul or dislodge switches, preventing proper pump operation and causing a flood. We have solid, durable, long-lasting covers that protect your family and your sump pumps.
At The Sump Pump Company, we do everything we can to make sure that your pump systems operate, without fail, for a long time. We showcase the reasons for having a backup system, and we talk about the peace of mind you enjoy knowing you’re protected. That’s all great stuff. Until you have a flood.
It’s an unfortunate fact that no pump system we ever install will last forever. It truly is not a matter of if, but WHEN something is going to fail. The best thing you can do is to properly care for and maintain your pump systems, to maximize their lifespan and help ensure they work when the moment of truth arrives.
Our inspection & function check service is your best insurance to make sure your vital pump systems are in top condition, ready to keep your home dry. Our comprehensive checklist reviews every aspect of your primary and battery backup pump systems. We’ll add battery fluid & clean the battery terminals on your backup system, test all of your pump switches to make sure they turn on & off properly, and inspect your piping systems to make sure they’re sound and leak-free. If you have a home security system interface or auto-dialer, we’ll test to make sure that works as well. If anything has worn out and needs replacement, we can take care of it right then and there (pricing will be quoted before any additional work is done).
Regular inspection and maintenance helps identify and fix small problems before they become big ones. Don’t just believe everything’s OK with your sump pump systems – know you’re protected by keeping them properly maintained, and enjoy the peace of mind!
